COSMO-SkyMed is a constellation of 3 satellites with a 4th satellite due for launch in 2010. COSMO-SkyMed is a high resolution X-band radar sensor and is the first dual purpose satellite designed for both civil and military applications. With its daily revisit it can be used for a variety of applications, such as monitoring of ice, floods and pollution. The Spotlight mode has 1m spatial resolution and the ScanSAR mode has 100m resolution but covers a large swath of 200 km. COSMO-SkyMed is also a full polarimetric sensor allowing HH, VH, VV and HV polarisations to be used which can assist in feature characterisation for different applications.
